Behind the Internet Boom
Southeast Asia is a pretty dynamic place – you mix extreme poverty and third
world conditions with advanced technologies coming out of the region and a love
of technology. Finding internet access throughout Cambodia and Vietnam is now a
cinch – WiFi cafes dot the streets of Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City. With all
of this rampant internet access though, the governments in Cambodia and Vietnam
are having a hard time keeping control over the internet usage…for Vietnam
controlling online casino gambling has become a major issue. Because gambling is
legal in Cambodia, residents near the border and in Ho Chi Minh are able to even
access online casinos and gambling sites from broadcasts happening from
Cambodia!
The Vietnam government has reported that online casino gambling is steadily on
the rise despite the fact that the activity is wholly illegal in the country.
The illegal gambling though has been hard for the government and police
departments to trace because it is taking place on laptop computers rather than
out of a handful of cyber cafes (this is often the case in developing countries
or those with strict bans). So the police cannot merely find one or two local
establishments and make a bust – rather they have to use more advanced
internet-savvy tracking methods to find the online casino gambling rings.
The Southern Vietnam government has really only just caught wind of how much
money is changing hands every day in these illegal online casino gambling rings.
And beyond just the fact that the activity is illegal, many gamblers are
reporting that the casinos are unscrupulous and that the odds largely favor the
house – so the efforts to crack down on illegal gambling are also for the safety
and protection of Vietnamese. |
