Incredibly Weak Evidence
The new refrain for anything involving Spencer Bachus is now “what was he
thinking.” The phrase applies to so much of what he has done in relation to the
US online casino gambling industry that it just needs to be synonymous with his
name at this point. In this case, as we further read through the transcripts of
last week’s Congressional hearing in the House Financial Services Committee its
quite apparent that Bachus is willing to say just about anything to keep new
legislation related to the online casinos from passing through and demonstrate
his avid support for the flawed (and dare we say disastrous) UIGEA.
During Bachus’ five minutes to state his case to Congress about why the US
should block offshore online casinos he read a letter from the Shawn Henry, the
FBI Assistant Director. Henry’s letter would have undoubtedly provided strong
support for Bachus’ case…well, it would have if Henry hadn’t admitted to the
fact that he has done no research and has no factual and statistical support to
his claims that the US internet gambling industry is dangerous. This letter
clearly indicated that although the FBI was feasibly against a regulated and
licensed US online casino gambling industry, they hadn’t actually fully
considered any aspect of the situation.
Henry’s letter, which Bachus READ ALOUD at the hearing, went on to note that the
FBI has not discussed the online casino gambling situation with foreign
counterparts…or anyone for that matter. Is it surprising that this is the type
of hard and true “support” that Bachus is able to dredge up? Bachus’ antics and
“evidence” are traditionally of this questionable nature, but in this case, this
was the Congressional hearing. This was a prime opportunity to Bachus to really
present his best arguments…and he read Henry’s letter. Not a brilliant move. |
