How Would Tiered Licensing Work?
The UK government has announced that plans are underway for the government to
reinvestigate the and analyze the current UK gambling regulations, licensing,
and policies that affect the land and online casinos. The 2005 UK Gambling Act
came into affect in September 2008 and completely altered the landscape of the
UK’s gambling industry. Some of the changes though have been incredibly negative
for the online casino sites and particularly the land bingo operators. Many UK
licensed and operating gambling companies are faced with double taxation – fees
so heavy that the sites are no longer able to fully operate in the market and
stay profitable. Because of the high taxes online gambling companies have begun
to leave the UK for licensing and instead seek shelter in more reasonably taxed
licensing jurisdictions like the Isle of Man and Gibraltar.
In response to the number of online casinos leaving the market the UK government
has announced that a new bill would create a tiered licensing structure in the
UK for online casinos in particular. The tiered licensing structure in still in
development, but the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport in the UK has
already announced that the main thrust of a new licensing structure would be
designed to more evenly distribute the financial burden across UK licensed and
foreign licensed online casino companies.
And while this thought is appealing on one level because it aims at pulling in
more contributions from foreign licensed online casinos, many internet gambling
companies claim that this tiered structure still does not address the
high/double taxes that UK internet gambling companies are going to face. |
