Online Casino Affects US Residents
The US online casino gambling industry has been hotly objected to over the past
three years and numerous interest groups, citizens, and politicians have pursued
a way to reverse the controversial UIGEA. The news though that James Giordano
accepted a plea bargain with US prosecutors is enough to send many within the
industry into frenzy of action. Although Giordano is far from an innocent US
gambler, the Department of Justice is increasingly becoming more bold in its
attempts to block and stop illegal online casino gambling. Just a few months
back a US citizen was held in contempt of court for refusing to disclose which
gambling site he used, and now Giordano is facing jail time for his decision to
operate an illegal online betting site catering toward US players.
Giordano does not feel that the US government is acting within its rights by
prosecuting him for offshore online casino gambling actions considering his
business was licensed outside of the US and none of the bets were accepted on US
soil. That argument doesn’t seem to hold firm with the officials and prosecutors
though and Giordano is facing jail time for his actions.
Giordano’s argument is actually a chief argument of many online casino gambling
supporters – where is the logic in blocking offshore operators when the US still
allows carve-outs for very specific types of gambling? Additionally, the laws
are ineffective because US gamblers are still going to seek out ways to gamble
and bet through the internet, instead of spending tax dollars on prosecuting US
residents the US government could do better by creating a regulated gambling
market that actual protects US gamblers from unscrupulous betting companies. |
