Recap of 2009: US Edition
As these final days of the year come to a close, it’s prime time that we take a
look back at what the online casino gambling industry has gone through over the
past year. There have been ups and downs thanks to the recession and in the US
market, the US Department of Justice has really stepped up efforts to enforce
the UIGEA and that has had a pretty negative effect on several key US facing
online casinos. In the US market, so much of the reflection really centers on
the ongoing fight for new policies. The UIGEA has been a controversial source of
debate among politicians for three years now, but only this year has alternative
legislation truly made it as far as the floor of Congress for consideration.
There was a delicate dance happening in the US market across 2009 as the online
casino gambling supporters worked to repeal the UIGEA and pass new licensing
legislation in the country while opponents pushed for a full implementation of
UGIEA enforcement regulations in early December. Neither side achieved those
goals, but the opponents to a legalized industry that licenses offshore online
casinos scored a bit of a coupe as the DoJ seized millions of dollars in bank
accounts that are linked to offshore gambling sites.
Those account seizures set several of the online casino back a good chunk of
change and forced other gambling sites to even reconsider their tenuous position
in the US market (Golden Casino). Throughout all of this the US gamblers
themselves consistently appealed to their Congressional representatives for
support of Frank’s bill and President Obama erred on the side of caution and
possible support of the internet gambling industry by stopping the December 1,
2009 implementation of UIGEA enforcement regs. |
