Pending EU Online Casino Issue
The European Union has really fought hard over the past several years to create
a level playing field for the online casino gambling industry and squash the
strong monopolies that are still in place throughout several EU member states.
As the European Commission strongly fights the monopolies, the European Court of
Justice has made the situation a little bit harder with by not coming out with a
clear ruling about the legalities and justifications for operating a protected
state monopoly. Now, this situation is cropping up in full force as a vote about
the online casinos in Belgium has the industry up in arms and some of the
betting organizations questioning the legalities.
The European Gaming and Betting Association has come out vocally against the new
policies in Belgium that clearly create a monopoly within the country. The EGBA
speaks highly in favor of a level online casino gambling industry that takes
into consideration the protocols in the in EU treaty that note that all EU
member-states must support the free trades of goods and services amongst
themselves. With the new policies in Belgium, that is clearly not the case.
Foreign online casinos have been banned from the market and the state is looking
to protect the revenues that it currently receives from land betting shops and
specifically Belgian gambling operations.
At this point, the new vote in Belgium puts this country right on the
Commission’s list alongside countries like Sweden, Greece, and others. If the
Belgian vote holds, the online casino gambling ban makes for one more headache
and one more step in the wrong direction in the EU’s fight for an open and fair
gambling market. |
