Online Casinos are Miffed
The European Commission has been incredibly shaken up this month with the full
announcement of new appointments within the Commission. Most notable, of course,
is the fact that very pro-online casino gambling Commission Charlie McCreevy has
been succeeded by Michel Barnier. McCreevy is well known among the international
online casinos because of his very adamant support toward creating a level and
open EU internet gambling industry. Under McCreevy, the Commission strongly
pursued those EU countries that operate a monopoly and protect state earned
revenues by unfairly banning and blocking foreign gambling companies. That
behavior just didn’t fly with the old Commissioner, and the online gambling
companies are left wondering if the new Commissioner will act as strongly
against the state gambling monopolies.
That’s the question of the day really. The Commission has made incredible
progress over the past several years about eliminating state monopolies related
to the online casinos and creating a more level playing field and there is a
strong hope that the new Commissioner will continue to support these efforts.
Although McCreevy has made inroads with countries like Denmark, Greece, and
Sweden, there is a lot more work that needs to be done, and follow-ups that the
Commission will have to make if there is any hope for progress to continue.
One of the more alarming aspects of the new appointment for Commissioner are
Barnier’s former positions within the French government. There is a possibility
that Barnier will adopt a more French interpretation of the possible online
casino gambling policies, and that would mean less of a focus on a completely
level internet gambling playing field. |
