Could he be Leaving?
The online casino gambling issue is finally making itself public in Congress
this month, and as the discussion begin, there is still speculation that any
form of counter UIGEA legislation could take several years to pass. One of the
biggest factors preventing new regulations for foreign online casinos in the US
market has been the disapproval and vocal opposition of Harry Reid, the Senate
Majority Leader. Reid is openly against all of the current attempts to legalize
and regulate internet gambling and has openly noted that he will sabotage and
veto any new legislation that makes it that far. This has been particularly
frustrating for supporters of a regulated US online gambling market.
The latest speculation though indicates that Reid may not be around long enough
to veto new online casino gambling legislation because there is not an
overwhelming amount of support for Reid in his home state of Nevada. Reid is up
for reelection and although this Senate Democrat does have some support in the
state, he also only has a 38 percent positive approval from residents; this
could make reelection particularly tricky. Reid is a strong supporter of land
gambling interests, and since the land casinos have not come to a positive
conclusion on the online gambling industry, Reid also has not openly supported
any pro-internet gambling regulations.
But if he doesn’t stay in office, that could mean a much better chance of the
Senate approving new online casino gambling regulations. The Senate would still
be very, very far from a sure bet, but that would be one major obstacle
overcome. |
