Olympics Intersect with Online Casinos
The Vancouver Olympic Committee has been put in the defensive position this week
as criticism comes in about the Committee’s decision to honor Alwyn Morris with
the carrying of the Olympic flame through the Mohawk Indian reservation. The
controversy lies in Morris’ link to the illegal US online casino gambling
industry through Bodog, a US facing internet betting and gambling site that
specifically disregards US laws and still offers internet betting services to US
players. But the other layer to the situation, outside of the online casinos,
centers on Morris’ position as a former Olympic gold medallist for the canoeing
in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.
In that regard, Morris was certainly the ideal candidate to carry the flame. But
on the flip side, Morris is now the CEO of the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group, which
owns and operates Bodog’s North American business – and that has raised some
contention in the media. The Olympic Committee though has not backed down one
inch from its decision to use Morris for the flame carrying. Further compounding
the issue beyond even the online casinos is the fact that tribe by and large
does not support the Olympics and there were peaceful protests as the flame was
carried through the reservation.
The Bodog situation is the largest factor in this case, and Morris link to the
illegal US online casino gambling industry. The Olympics strive for ultimate
compliance with international laws and regulations and there is no denying that
Bodog is blatantly operating against US laws – whether they are fair or not. |
