Healthcare Affects on Internet Gambling
The United States is in a precarious position right now as the healthcare reform
bill is about to pass through the Senate and at that point it is very nearly a
done deal. But there is still the problem of fully paying for all of these
massive changes that are pretty much the platform issue of the Democratic Party.
President Obama promised for changes to healthcare on the campaign trail and
it’s now closer to passing than ever before. And luckily the healthcare issue
may be just what the online casinos need to get a leg up in the debates about
regulated and licensed internet gambling. There has long been a hope that the
internet gambling industry can ride the coattails of the healthcare bills and
find passage through a bill that would use taxes from gambling to offset some of
the costs of government subsidized healthcare.
These notion was incredibly short-lived as an actually viable option; it lasted
for about a day before the Democrats asked the Senator proposing the bill to
withdraw any link between the online casinos and healthcare reform.
Interestingly though, it was pulled because it could stall the healthcare talks,
not because it was actually a bad idea. There is a strong motivating factor to
passing a similar bill perhaps next year if it would provide more funding to the
US’ healthcare plan. Nay-sayers now may sing a different tune if the healthcare
bill is already fully passed. At least that’s the hope of the online casino
gambling companies.
The internet gambling companies are at an impasse right now - the UIGEA makes
internet gambling illegal in the US, but the support regulations have still not
passed through into law, and that means that it’s a bit of a regulatory black
hole…both illegal and yet not fully enforceable. |
