Entering a Guilty Plea
Controversy is heating up the online casino gambling industry as the industry
media reports that a former bookmaker in the US – and in fact one of the first
internet betting sites to launch for the US market, has plead guilty to
promoting illegal gambling activities in the US. The United States government
makes headlines on a regular basis because of the government’s decision to
harshly prosecute online casinos and gambling companies that dare to operate in
the US space. James Giordano operated an illegal offshore betting company for
several years before the US government uncovered the betting operation and made
a series of key arrests in the case – or actually, the police arrested nearly
every single person and company involved!
Giordano’s books were seized and operations stopped within the United States –
and perhaps the hardest fact to deal with was the arrest of Giordano’s wife and
daughter, all of the company employees and affiliated companies that were
facilitating Giordano in his illegal offshore online casino betting operation.
The arrests have been in place for some time now and more recently, Giordano
finally entered a guilty plea to the crime of promoting gambling in the US.
Giordano’s sentencing really could have been a lot worse; in most cases it is
much worse with the online casinos acting as a part of the equation – the US
government does not often show mercy and understanding. In this case, Giordano
was given a five month jail term and he agreed to forfeit one million dollars.
But as an indication of the US government’s more understanding position on the
issue, Giordano was able to keep his home and his jail term could have been so
much worse if you look at the BetonSports case as any indication of possible
jail situations and sentencing. |
