German Still Gambling at Online Casinos

The German government implemented new legislation at the beginning of 2009; this new legislation was aimed at eliminating foreign online casino gambling and betting in the state and instead funneling all of the state gambling activity through a state monopoly. All of the German states agreed to support the state gambling monopoly, and all but one have over the entirety of the past year. Interestingly though, although Germany has taken measures to block offshore online casinos, a recent study indicates that internet gambling habits in the country have not changed very much over the past year despite the much more stringent controls on offshore and foreign internet gambling.

The German Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media commissioned this study as a way of measuring the effectiveness of this year’s new regulations. The results of the study really show that the German government’s attempts to block and ban certain types of online casino gambling have not actually worked; Germans are still gambling in the same style and places they did before the new regulation. Additionally, the study notes that Germany has a large and forward thinking online casino gambling and betting market in place; the study indicates that although state lottery in the country is popular, internet betting and gambling rates indicate that Germans are ready for a more modernized and inclusive online gambling market.

All of the reason that German and other EU member-states have given to justify state online casino gambling and betting monopolies are not holding true. A well regulated and licensed foreign gambling market is cohesively able to implement safeguards in the industry just as well as state governments, and the internet gambling sites have shown that they are willing to really work with authorities and watchdog organizations to maintain integrity in sports betting and other sectors of the market.
