Wrongly Focused
The US Department of Justice is pretty busy these past couple of years
preoccupied with the prosecution of companies that violate the US Wire Act and
the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). These two acts together
make it currently and for the whole of the past illegal for companies to operate
online casinos for the US market. The UIGEA though is fairly new (just under
three years old) and is highly flawed according to most analysts, experts, and a
growing number of politicians. The easy fact of the situation indicate that the
US’s ban on offshore gaming companies has been hugely unsuccessful because there
is no way for the government to completely and effectively stop the processing
of financial transactions with offshore online casino sites.
The DoJ has also brought in a pretty chunk of money over the past couple of
years from online casino gambling businesses that have rather paid the money to
the government than go through a lengthy trial process. The DoJ is quite
preoccupied with this specific industry, the online casinos and internet
gambling companies, and there is a fear that the Department is overlooking other
sectors of the market that could be potentially quite important.
The DoJ focus on the European online casinos has really angered a lot of
European companies and the European Union is actually now quite actively
involved in negotiating with the US government to stop the DoJ from continuing
efforts against EU companies. Another key focus over the past several years has
been on the BetonSports debacle; luckily that situation is finding resolution
slowly but surely and one of the cases is actually in the sentencing phase. |
