A Threat to Land Gambling
All of the talk these days in the South African market is really centering on
the prospect of new online casino gambling regulations and a licensing regime
that the government has announced will likely be implemented in the coming
months. But the wait has been incredibly long and online casinos are already
operating in the South African market and the land gambling venues are quite
worried that they will not be able to adequately compete with the internet
gambling industry. But the South African regulations should actually address
this concern and make it viable for land gambling companies to also corner a
piece of the internet gambling market should they so choose.
Land casinos often fear the spread of the online gambling industry and feel
threatened – this is a key concern in the US and one that the land gambling
companies are still actively expressing. In the South African market the
situation is the same, there is a fear that a legalized online casino gambling
market will wipe out the already legal land gambling establishments. But a key
point that has to be made is that the situation could only get better than it is
right now, with internet gambling unregulated.
In a regulated South African market the online casinos will have to pay taxes
and adhere to tight regulations to operate legally within the market. Since the
land gambling venues will have similar regulations there should be no gross and
unfair competition. And the regulations are supposedly going to directly address
this growing fear and work to level the playing field for the land and internet
gambling companies. |
