They Support Poker
The United States is catching a lot of bad press in the international online
casino gambling industry because of the government’s decision to ignore not only
the efforts of the European Union to address complaints, but US officials are
blatantly ignoring a previous ruling from the World Trade Organization that the
US’s UIGEA contravened international trade agreements by blocking offshore
online casinos and protecting US gambling companies from competition. But, all
of this criticism does not take into consideration those politicians who are
actually lobbying for change and recognize that the US is out of its
international rights with continued block and ban of foreign online casino
gambling sites.
Steve Cohen, (D-Tenn.), came out last month to the charity function that the PPA
hosted to conclude the National Poker Week. Cohen not only came out in support
of the charity, but he was very vocal in his support of the PPA’s efforts to
create a legalized and regulated internet gambling market. Cohen’s sentiments
echoed the main message that the online casinos and internet gambling sites are
trying to send out to the rest of the world, he notes, “We need revenue and if
poker is something people like to do that is fun, doesn’t hurt anybody, and is a
game of skill, then we ought to make it legal. We should let people tax it and
allow it to be played."
The argument for taxing the online casinos and internet poker sites as a source
of revenue for the federal government is a hot topic right now. The government
is currently in a huge budget deficit and is attempting to fund new programs and
efforts to bail out the failing US economy. Cohen’s point is solid. Online poker
players are already playing the skill game, why not tax it, reap the benefits,
and make the American public jus that much happier. |
