Still Trying to Sway New England
The State of Massachusetts in the United States has become a bit of a
battleground now that the online casino gambling issue has gained attention and
focus from the international media. One of the big concerns in the US right now,
one that may have even eclipsed the fight to legalize online casinos are the
efforts from individual states to legalize in-state gaming as a way to generate
new revenue streams. Massachusetts is coming up to election time and the
republican candidate for the job is actually pro sports betting as a solution to
the budget deficit. This plan is not actually a core tenant of the Republican
platform – the conservative right is largely against the expansion of gambling
in either the land or online casino gambling industries.
The economic recession though has some states running scared and really trying
to find new avenues for bringing in revenue. That means that even politicians
that may not have one hundred percent support for the online casinos are see
land and internet betting expansion as a gentle way to bring gambling into the
state and bring more revenue into the budget. Christy Mihos is the Republican
candidate in question who has proposed that by expanding the scope of gambling
in the state Massachusetts could add as much as $1 billion in annual revenues.
Other states are just as keen on the idea but there are a few spoilsports out
there that not only have objection to a US online casino gambling industry, but
even and in-state betting market would threaten the integrity of US sports
according to the US sports associations. As far as Massachusetts is concerned,
there is every reason to believe that Mihos’ plan has the ability to not only
become implemented, but will actually work in the long run to boost state
revenues. |
