The Online Casino Study
The UK Gambling act of 2005 was one of the most progressive and liberal pieces
of gambling legislation in the world. The Gambling Act outlined very liberal
land and online casino gambling laws for the United Kingdom that have created a
gambling market that allows gambling companies unprecedented freedom and access
to the market. The legislation not only open wide the doors with a welcome to
the online casinos, but the Gambling Act outlined very specific regulations and
a framework for controlling the emerging and expanding internet gambling
industry. Now that the Gambling Act has been in place for several years though
the UK’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport is conducting a study to review
the effectiveness of the UK Gambling Act.
The study is expected to take place through the end of the year and will
thoroughly look into every aspect of the Act – from regulation of the online
casinos to claims that taxes on land gambling venues are unfair and causing
major closures of certain sectors of the industry. One of the key complaints
coming from the UK online casino gambling groups is that the Gambling Act gives
foreign registered companies unfair advantages over the UK companies. The UK
gambling companies are just looking for the government to create a more level
playing field so that companies choosing to base out of the UK have some of the
same advantages of foreign registered companies.
Once the study has been completed the results will be tabled in Parliament for
consideration; the plan is to have it in Parliament by the beginning of 2010.
The UK White List and the taxation of the online casino gambling industry are
key concerns voiced by the industry companies themselves and these issues will
likely be featured heavily in the final report. |
