Just Stop the Investigation
A bit of power play has been occurring between the US Trade Representatives and
the European Union delegates sent to the US to discuss the US’s online casino
gambling policy. The US has consistently refused to come to the table with new
negotiations for the past nearly three years that the UIGEA has been in effect.
While the UIGEA has been enforced by the US Department of Justice the foreign
online casinos that previously operated in the market have been specifically
targeted for investigations and prosecution. The EU is now simply requesting
that the US DoJ stop all of the investigations against EU online gambling sites
under the pressure of the Remote Gaming Association.
The EU and the RGA claim that the US unfairly discriminates against European
online casinos and gambling groups when prosecuting for breaking the UIGEA. The
US though is now making this issue truly international as the USTR consistently
just ignore the situation at hand. There is no word on if negotiations are
actually proceeding, but the EU has clearly outlined its expectations.
Basically, although the UIGEA still controversially contravenes World Trade
Organization trade agreements, the issue at hand is really aimed at getting the
US government to agree to stop prosecuting EU online casinos and internet
gambling companies.
That is the main thrust of the new negotiation attempts, the EU government is
simply seeking protection for its online casinos from the US government. The CEO
of the RGA, Clive Hawkswood really simply outlined the situation. Although the
RGA believes that the US should alter policies for a more inclusive and open
internet gambling industry, the government is really most notably looking for
“securing this indemnity from prosecution” more than anything else right now. |
