The Danish Situation
Gambling in Denmark has proven itself a very big headache for the international
online casino gambling industry. The Danish government has long supported a
state run monopoly that specifically forbids foreign internet gambling companies
from accessing Danish internet gamblers. The European Commission has placed
Denmark on its radar for quite some time now and the Danish government has not
responded positively to the Commission’s attempts to negotiate more open and
fair gambling regulations that would open up the Danish market to foreign online
casinos. There is an inkling of change though lately as the Danish government
speculates on implementation of new, more inclusive gambling regulations.
But is it all just an attempt to mask the gambling monopoly? There is
speculation that the Danish gambling regulations in current development would
not allow online casinos to operate in the market profitably. That is a tricky
issue. The Danish government is proposing tax regulations on foreign gambling
companies that are astronomical and far above the accepted norm in the industry.
The online casinos though are watching to see how this situation progresses. At
least the Danish government is making some attempt to address the gambling
monopoly in the country – this in and of itself is a major step in the right
direction. It seems as though the Danish government is in for a big struggle
though as the regulations are developed. Surely the Commission will have
something to say about the huge taxation rates and cost-prohibitive nature of
the proposed regulations and the Danish government is going to have to contend
with a whole lot of international input as this process unfolds. |
