The Ripple Effect
There is no doubt that online casinos are now all but fleeing the UK in an
effort to stay profitable in these tough economic times and escape the extremely
high taxes that the UK government has placed on land and internet gaming
companies. The mass exodus from the UK that has been making headlines throughout
the industry media all comes down to one company, William Hill. Will Hill is one
of the oldest names in the UK betting industry and the company has fully
expanded into the online casino gambling and betting industry over the past
decade. Will Hill is like many other UK gambling brands, it has a well
established reputation in the UK and because the company started out decades ago
as a land betting institution in the city, Will Hill has a lot of roots in the
UK.
The roots though are not enough to keep this company sticking around to further
endure the harsh taxes applied to online casinos operating out of the UK
licensing jurisdiction. The UK government has refused to alter internet gambling
legislation one iota over the past several years despite outright pleas from the
online casino gambling and betting companies. In response, Will Hill finally
reached its breaking point and announced a planned move to the more
tax-favorable licensing jurisdiction of Gibraltar.
Will Hill’s decision to move out of the UK has now had a ripple effect on the
other online casinos that were sticking it out – companies like Ladbrokes and
Betfair have to remain competitive if in the internet betting market and now
that one of the big guys has announced the move, the rest are following suite. |
