Support from the Right
There is no denying that the main opposition to an open and free online casino
and poker gambling industry is the religious right in the US. The conservative
republicans in the US are almost wholly responsible for the fact that the
controversial UIGEA gambling ban passed in the first place. The US has
effectively created a protected market that blocks out all foreign competition
from online casinos and gambling groups. And now that there is a big push to
repeal the UIGEA and regulate and license the industry, the republicans are also
spearheading every effort possible to stop the legalization of internet
gambling. Surprisingly though, there is some support coming out of the moderate
right as the PPA and Barney Frank push new legislation that would introduce a
regulatory framework for the industry in the US market.
Barney Frank has notably gained support from a handful of republicans on his
bill that has been a long time coming and is currently awaiting discussion in
the next Congressional session. The PPA though is also pretty persuasive in
regards to the internet poker industry in particular. The online casinos are a
completely separate issue according to the PPA because internet poker is a skill
based game that should not fall under the same legislation as chance gambling
games.
Last month’s PPA sponsored land charity poker tournament brought out the support
of Peter King and Lynn Westmoreland (R-New York, R-Geog.). King was very vocal
to the online casino and poker gambling industry news organizations in his
support of Barney Frank’s current bill in Congress. Although they are in
separate parties, King notes that they have definitely aligned on this issue and
the need for better control and regulation of the online gambling industry. |
