Repressing Online Casinos
The United States and China have shocked the online casino gambling industry
last week with the announcement that both countries are committed to ensuring
free and open global trade. This announcement comes as a surprise because these
are the two most repressive countries in the world when it comes to internet
gambling interests. The US has for three years now enforced internet gambling
policies designed to protect the US market for foreign online casinos and
competition. China is in a similar situation and both countries are just not
very open to international internet gambling trade right now. But yet the two
countries entered into “Strategic and Economic Dialogue” recently and came to
the conclusion that both counties believe that it is in their best interests to
maintain and honor international trade commitments.
For the online casinos, they are left wondering if this means that the United
States is planning an overhaul of the UIGEA and the nation’s protectionist
gambling policies. The discussions between the two countries were fostered by
some of the highest level officials possible, Cabinet-level officials from the
US and the Chinese equivalent entered into the talks. China is not faring a
whole lot better in the industry criticism; China just last month foiled an
attempt to really and truly place huge censorship on the internet and thus more
effectively block online caisno gambling sites from the market.
These two countries are a bit of a joke at this point unless each country also
plans to revamp the repressive online casino gambling legislation. Both
countries are actually hugely reliant on global trade to keep their economies
moving strongly so it’s a wonder that the internet gambling industry has been so
tightly controlled and protected.
