Online Casino Repercussions Begin
The ongoing negotiations between Antigua and Barbuda and the United States have
dragged on for several years now and some companies are just sick and tired of
the waiting. The United States unfairly blocks offshore online casinos from
accessing the US market – a move that significantly damaged the Antiguan economy
and made many sites fold under. The Antiguan government sought the help and
ruling of the World Trade Organization in the case and the United States was
found to fault international trade agreements. The WTO awarded Antiguan trade
dispensations against US copy and trade marks so the tune of roughly $21 million
for the online casino gambling situation.
This decision seemed to have woken up the US Trade Representatives and the
Antiguan government has been in stalled negotiations with the US for quite
awhile now. The US is refusing to come to the table and lift portions of the
UIGEA and its online casino gambling trade blocks and is generally not willing
to give Antigua a whole lot in the negotiations. Basically, the threat of
infringement on US music and entertainment copyrights has the USTR coming to the
table – but just so that Antigua does not make good on the trade dispensations.
This means that the online casinos that were so negatively affected by the UIGEA
and the US’s continued discrimination are still in a holding pattern. There is
just no movement happening and the Antiguan government has released very few
details to indicate that the negotiations are progressing well – that is quite
disheartening for the online gambling industry. |
