Someone's Gotta Pay
The newest debate heating up the media concerning the online casino gambling
industry is specifically related to the question of weather churches and
tax-exempt organizations have the right to enter into public political debate.
The current tax-code says that they are not allowed to talk politics because of
their status as a tax-exempt organization, but there is now a pretty big issue
with that since the Internal Revenue Service has actually begun to enforce this
piece of the code. The issue cropped up with the last presidential election and
the fact that church groups and tax-exempt organization entered into the
political debate to specifically campaign against the online casinos.
The churches do not pay any taxes and therefore do not have the right to
influence public decisions at the poles is the thinking behind the current
regulations and tax code. But the online casinos contend that they are willing
to pay taxes and that should give them more rights to campaign in the US than
the tax-exempt organizations. The churches and organizations affected by this
are claiming that the IRS code limits their Constitutional rights. But someone’s
gotta pay is the bottom line.
The online casinos and public opinion really is seeming to come down on the side
of the government in this – the churches do not pay, if they want to start
paying taxes then they will be more than welcome to enter into political
debates. The internet gambling companies are there and will likely be paying
taxes very soon, and money talks in the US right now. |
