Is It Legal?
France is in the news a lot this week as the country finalizes draft regulations
that will open up the French market to foreign online casinos and internet
gambling companies. The European Commission has been working on leveling the
playing field in the EU for a while now and the pending launch of new
regulations is seen as a step in the right direction…or almost in the right
direction. There has been a lot of talk lately about the fact that the French
government is still looking to put some questionable pieces of legislation in
place that may actually still contravene EU laws and policies by limiting the
foreign online casino access within certain sectors of the market.
Specifically, the watchdog groups in the EU are looking at the sports betting
part of the draft regulations with a wary eye. As the regulations are worded now
there is a bizarre protocol in the regulations that would force land and online
casino sports betting companies to pay money to the sports federations a fee to
offer bets on those games. The reasoning behind it is presumably for good reason
– to help ensure the integrity of sports in the EU, but the fact is, this
legislation may just be one more way to further protect and limit the online
casino gambling industry from entering a level and open French gambling market.
The two main organizations watching the development of these organizations are
the European Gaming and Betting Association and the Remote Gambling Association.
The EGBA in particular has spoken out with criticism of this regulation that
would exist for the online casino sports betting organizations. At this point
the draft regulations are still being tweaked and the EGBA is encouraging the
French officials to drop this fee that the foreign operators would have to pay
to the sporting organizations. |
