Europe Influencing the US Market
The European online casinos have been really patient and only moderately vocal
about the US internet gambling situation. The European gambling industry has
been targeted very hard by the United States government and specifically the US
Department of Justice’s prosecution and discrimination against European gaming
companies that generally fall into the illegal “offshore online casino” bracket.
The internet gambling companies are really actively asking the EU government to
force the US to stop the discrimination and legal action. Beyond just that
though, a new report out of The Telegraph, a UK newspaper, indicates that online
gambling companies are actually joining into the fray and paying US lobbyists to
lobby politicians for new and more inclusive internet gambling laws.
Interestingly enough there is no real way to tell just how much the online
casinos are spending on these lobbying deals. The US government forces the
lobbying companies to use transparency in their policies and report not only the
companies on behalf of which they are lobbying, but also the amount that the
lobbying companies spend on the efforts. There is a little discrepancy here
though since other ancillary costs are excluded from the mandatory disclosure
and so it unclear the precise figures the online casino companies are spending
for US lobbying.
One thing is for sure though – whatever they are spending will be well worth the
cost should the US government decide to legalize and regulate the online casinos
which is the main thrust of the efforts at this point. Barney Frank represents
most of the industry while there are separate efforts going forward that would
legalize poker as a game of skill. |
