Incredibly Slow Justice
A major question put out into the online casino gambling industry is “why is it
taking so long?” This question is pertinent in both the US and EU markets really
as both of these countries are encountering serious delays and problems in the
implementation of cohesive and strong internet gambling legislation. The US
market has been splintered for nearly three years now because of the UIGEA and
its ban of offshore online casinos while the EU market has also been making
headlines for just about that same length of time. The online casinos are
actually a fairly new medium comparatively and in the broader spectrum and the
implementation and repercussions of this newish industry are still being ironed
out.
For the United States, the process of licensing and regulating the online
casinos is not a sure thing by any means. The conservative right in the US,
evangelical Christians, are pushing to keep the flawed and controversial UIGEA
in place because of false assertions that the US citizens are safer without
legalized internet gambling in the country. But really, that is largely untrue
and there is a big push to legalize and regulate the online casino gambling
sites in the coming months. The delay though is caused by the efforts of the
right to keep the protectionist UIGEA in place for as long as possible.
As for the EU, the process of justice is incredibly slow and the European
Commission has really very little authority to actually force nations to comply
with EU online casino gambling policies. The only way to force compliance is
through trials in the European Court of Justice for the nations that refuse to
accept negotiations – this can take years on end though to process through.
