Holding Off the Vote
Opponents to a legalized online casino gambling industry are now in a tricky
position since the pro-internet gambling legislation is closer than ever to
finding passage. The support for the internet gambling industry is growing, and
not just throughout the US, but an increasing number of politicians are throwing
their weight behind bills that are designed to license and regulate the offshore
online casinos seeking access to the US market. As Barney Frank’s efforts gain
steam and are pushing through Congress, the best that the opponents can hope to
do is stall the discussions and the eventual repeal of the UIGEA.
The conservative right is largely against the online casino gambling industry in
the US. There are a few notable Republicans who have actually put their public
voice behind the initiative to repeal the UIGEA, but by and large the effort is
powered by the Democrats and moderates. The conservative Republicans have really
tried every tactic they can muster up to slow down the support for legalized US
online casinos. One of the key tactics over the past three years has been the
spreading of misinformation and blatantly untrue facts. But the misinformation
has slowly been corrected by supporters of a free and open internet gambling
industry and the movement is gaining momentum.
One of the major recent setbacks came by way of the postponement of discussions
on Congressman Barney Frank’s bill that has finally made it to Congress.
Although the bill was due for discussion at the beginning of July, the date was
pushed back until the next Congressional session. This seems to be the key
strategy right now from the online casino gambling opposition. Since the
opposition is unsure of the outcome of a Congressional vote, they are determined
to hold of the vote as long as possible. |
