Hating on Poker
The USA has made headlines for years because of the decision to restrict access
to online casinos and internet poker within the country. The USA’s controversial
legislation is far from perfect and is certainly not the ideal route for
satisfying international trade agreements. Yet, for some reason, other nations
seem determined to follow suite and head down the same path. Russia and Italy
are two of the latest countries to announce new legislation and plans to block
and ban the online casino gambling industry. Italy in particular is causing a
lot of controversy right now with the decision to block internet poker because
it is such a sensitive issue in the European Union right now.
This line of action is not exactly new for Italy actually, but this is a new
attempt at an old issue. Italy has only just begun to liberalize the betting
market in the country, but online casinos and poker gambling are a whole other
issue and the small country is looking to enact legislation that would
conclusively block internet poker in the country. The EU response has,
understandably, not been very positive. The EU has really begun to look at
enforcement of free trade policies within the nations concerning online casinos
and internet gambling now that the issue is impacting foreign negotiations and
relationships with the United States.
The question is where does the legality lie? There are still foreign some online
casino internet poker gambling companies that do meet the new strict
requirements for the Italian market. The real issue comes down to the level of
control that the Italian government is looking to exercise over the internet
gambling industry –it comes very close and possibly does contravene free trade
policies between EU member states. |
