Kaplan Facing Some Time
The debacle that has been ongoing and has taken up a lot of court time over the
past several years is nearing the last act and may actually be close to
resolution. The US Department of Justice as built a strong case against
BetonSports over the past several years and actually has one of the founding
members and the former CEO of the now debunk offshore online casino betting
operation under arrest. Gary Kaplan was a founder of the company and his case
has progressed forward because he pleaded guilty to the numerous charges and
additionally agreed to forfeit a huge chunk of his illegally won money that came
from US bettors placing wages on matches from online and through the telephone.
The case against Carruthers is still pending.
The Kaplan case though is due for sentencing in October if all goes according to
plan and according to most estimations he is facing at minimum 41 months in
prison and it could be as long as 51. There is no telling how the judge is going
to rule in this case. Kaplan has a whole list of charges that he now does not
deny but at the same time, he has paid out the requested US $43.6 million and
admitted to the charges. Interestingly enough, although Kaplan entered a guilty
plea and acknowledges that he wrongly made the choice to enter into the offshore
online casino betting and gambling industry, Kaplan still feels that the US
legislation banning offshore betting and gambling are out of place.
The list of Kaplan’s charges include a variety of felony offenses: conspiracy to
violate both the Wire Wager Act and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt
Organizations Act, racketeering and other charges. Kaplan’s money has already
been forfeited to the US government and now it is just a waiting game until the
sentencing. |
