The EPT Route Disrupted
The European Poker Tour is a highly anticipated annual competition that tours
around Europe and lands in different cities every year bringing with it a high
level of gaming competition and a bit of fun as the tour generates a lot of
publicity and excitement as it tours through new cities. This year’s EPT planned
a stop in Moscow this month but the Russian government has thrown a kink in that
plan as the government looks to largely eliminate land and online casino
gambling in the country. A new decree from the Russian Youth, Sport, and Tourism
Minister now declares that poker, either at the land or the online casinos, is
no longer considered a sport and is now subject to the same gambling legislation
that has forced the brick and mortar gambling venues out of Russian cities.
There has been no word yet from the EPT on what will happen if the Ministry’s
decree still stands when the poker tour planned to proceed through Moscow.
Likely that leg of the trip will have to be canceled as there is likely not
enough time to prepare a new venue outside of the city for this stop on the
tour. The whole of the online casino poker gambling industry was actually pretty
eagerly eyeing the potential of the Russian market when poker was given
dispensation from the gambling ban in Russia.
There is discussion right now that the new ban on poker may stay or not
depending on which department has the right to classify a sport as a sport.
There is no telling really where this is headed but you can be sure that the
online casinos and internet poker sites are anxiously watching how these events
turn out. |
