They are Dead Wrong
The opposition to efforts to legalize and regulate a US online casino gambling
industry are resorting to spouting untruths and blatantly unfounded “facts” in
an effort to persuade the public that internet gambling is very dangerous. The
opposition has gotten really vocal lately because the legalization of the
industry is pretty imminent by all estimations. Barney Frank’s bill is scheduled
for discussion in the next Congressional session and the high level of
bipartisan support for his bill bodes well. But the conservative right just
can’t be content with a loss and take it gracefully. Instead, Director Suzii
Paynter of the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission is speaking out with
pretty ridiculous counter-arguments to the legalized and regulated online casino
gambling industry. Some of her comments to the Star-Telegram are actually
laughable in their vagueness and outright untruths.
She notes, “gambling is addictive; everyone knows that,” and then goes on to
remark that “complete access” to the online casinos will act as “speed for the
addiction.” But yet contrast her statement with the research that has come out
of the Harvard Medical School and it is apparent that Paynter is uninformed and
determined to spread misinformation about the gambling industry with every
intent of convincing politicians and voters to oppose measures to legalize the
online casino gambling industry.
One of key parts to the whole situation is the fact that the foes to online
casino gambling seem to have absolutely no perspective or impartiality. Research
has come out showing that not only are the internet gambling sites on par with
the land gambling venues in terms of safety, but they are also actually safer
than the land gambling sites, even despite the fact that gamblers have 24/7
access to the sites right from their own homes. |
