Attorney's Claim it's Legal
Zookz is a company operating out of St. Johns, Antigua that has just begun to
offer the questionably legal downloading of US music and movies from servers
that are based in Antigua. The US has international copyright protections on
various forms of media, music, and entertainment but the World Trade
Organization took an interesting route when granting the small island nation of
Antiguan copyright infringement dispensations as compensation for the US’s
unfair and discriminating online casino gambling legislation. Zookz has already
begun to cash in on this trade compensation allowance by the WTO even though the
Antiguan government claims that the company is operating out of order.
The compensation agreement was specifically designed to boost the Antiguan
economy because of the negative effects felt by the discriminating absence of US
online casino gambling revenues. The US is pretty keen on keeping US copyrights
in place though and has been negotiating with the Minister of Finance for
Antigua for some time now. Well, the negotiations are ongoing and seemingly
never conclusive. Zookz acted on the advice of lawyers based out of Antigua that
the company was able to act without the approval of the Antiguan government
because the business is licensed out of Antigua. It doesn’t even matter that the
company is not affiliated with the online casinos.
Zookz lawyers claim that the WTO ruling means that as long as the company is
Antiguan and owned and operating out of Antigua, that it does not need
authorization from the Antiguan government. |
