Changing Antigua Relationship

The small island nation of Antigua and Barbuda has made a strong move this month with the announcement that the tallest mountain in Antigua has been renamed in honor of the current US president, Barack Obama. The mountain chain that is now called Mount Obama is the highest in the nation and is hopefully a good omen for the country’s efforts to negotiate a new online casino gambling relationship with the US. Antigua has been in negotiations with the United States for many, many years now and Antigua even has the WTO organization on the country’s side…but that has had no major effect on the negotiations between the US and Antigua as far as the online casinos are concerned.

The naming of the island’s mountain after Obama obviously was not wholly to do with the current online casino gambling situation. There are much deeper reasons why the mountain was renamed and a plaque for the Mount Obama mentions the fact that November 4, 2008 was a historic date and President Obama is the first black US president in history – a historic moment indeed. But there has to be a niggling hope that the US will come around sometime soon on the online casino gambling issue.

Antigua’s economy was virtually destroyed when the US blocked offshore online casino gambling transactions and most of the US gambling industry folded over night. The World Trade Organization is even on the side of Antigua and there is a broad hope that this new US government affect change within the gambling industry.
