Broad Online Casino Issue for Governments
The Remote Gaming Association in the UK is not hiding the fact that the RGA is
hoping that the US will alter its online caisno gambling policy, but the real
thrust of the RGA’s assertions pertain to the US Department of Justice’s
continued prosecution of European internet gambling companies. The EU has
already negotiated with the US on the internet gambling issue previously and the
terms of the trade compensation agreement were sealed as a matter of national
security. With the negotiations completed the EU was done with the matter for a
time. That all changed over the past year though as the RGA has pushed for the
EU to re-enter into negotiations with the US government specifically on the
issue of the unfair and continued prosecution of EU online casinos.
The RGA feels that the US Department of Justice unfairly targets European
companies and that it needs to stop immediately. The US though is not really
willing to come to the table with new terms and has dismissed the EU’s
legitimate claim to negotiations about the issue because of the mere fact that
the EU has encountered issues with online casino monopolies operating within the
Union. But the RGA is really only looking for a solution to this pointed and key
issue even though there is a much broader issue at stake right now that also
needs to be addressed.
The RGA is willing to give the US government a pass on the fact that the UIGEA
blocks offshore online casinos in contravention of established international
trade agreements. Really, it comes down to the fact that European gambling
companies are living in fear right now of US action and the RGA is pressuring
the EU to resolve this issue as soon as possible. |
