Online Casino Move Bad for Sports
There is no secret right now that most of the major UK online casinos are moving
their headquarters offshore in an effort to avoid the heavy UK taxing that is in
place. The UK has some very unfavorable gambling tax legislation in place and
although many of the top UK brands like William Hill and Ladbrokes have toughed
out the competition for some time, the competition is too tough unless the
online casino gambling companies move outside of the UK tax legislation – but
that also means that the sites are outside of the UK’s very strict and stringent
internet gambling regulations and that fact has the sporting leagues worried.
There is a lot of concern lately about preserving the integrity of sports and
some of the sports associations are worried that match-fixing and other ills are
more likely when the gambling sites move offshore.
Right now there is just the intent really, the major UK online casino bookies
are still operating out of the UK. But that is going to be very short lived as
Ladbrokes has announced it fully plans to move to Gibraltar by the end of the
year and Will Hill may move even sooner than that. Corruption in sports is a
very real concern and the UK sports associations are now asking the UK
government to really address the situation seriously so that the major sports
books do not move out of the reach of stringent UK regulations.
At the same time though the online casinos and sports books in question are two
of the most respected institutions in the industry. And beyond that, Gibraltar
is also highly regarded for enforcing strong regulations and oversight for the
internet gambling companies licensed out of the jurisdiction. |
