A professor from the University of Illinois, John W. Kindt, has raised quite a few hackles in the past month with his article series about the US international gambling policies – including a look at both the land and online caisno gambling industries. Quite succinctly, Kindt’s articles note that legalized gambling in the US has weakened US national security by taking money out of the economy and putting it into the pockets of the private sector. The argument sounds a bit far-fetched at first – the online casinos and land gambling companies have been blamed for a lot, but this is a whole different situation. There are strengths and truths in his argument though, even with the bit of ridiculousness.

Basically, money that gamblers spend at the online casinos and land gambling venues would be going into other areas of the economy if gambling were not legalized. More money entering the economy would not only strengthen the economy but also allow the federal and state governments to supply more consumer services to the public. Without that money flowing into the economy, Kindt makes the leap to say that federal funds for the military sector are then severely lessened – this, in turn, weakens the US national security.

According to Kindt’s series, and in fact other economists, in countries without legalized gambling, the money put into the economy is able to then regenerate as many as three times as much currency going into the economy. This is not the case though when personal funds are essentially thrown at the private land and online casino gambling companies – that money never makes it back into the economy.
