Threat from the EU
The European Union is a pretty powerful entity that is calling for the United
States to alter its current online casino gambling policy to align with
international trade agreements. The EU recently announced that the year-long
investigation into the US’s internet gambling policy yielded the same conclusion
that the World Trade Organization reached – that the US is in direct violation
of international trade laws. The only problem is that the US government has been
traditionally unresponsive to these findings and the previous administration
out-right refused to even acknowledge that the WTO had a legitimately point.
This attitude though is not likely to get very far with the European Union.
The US and the EU do so much business together via trade and commerce that
threats and action from the EU will likely have a much more immediate effect
than the conclusions and assertions of the WTO (sadly, really – this situation
has the potential really undermine the power of the WTO in future circumstances.
Right now, the EU is pressured by the Remote Gaming Association and the online
casinos that feel unfairly targeted by US officials and the US Department of
Justice.
There is no roadmap for where the situation will progress now that the EU has
found the US online casino gambling policies in violation of trade treaties.
There are likely to be many more negotiations and discussions, and this time,
the US authorities will have to come to the table willing to bargain or risk
severely damaging the relationship with the EU government. |
