What Were They Thinking
The online casino gambling industry, and certainly the Maltese Gaming Council
have to be wondering just what the MEPs in the EU Parliament were thinking when
they voted on the recent initiative reports. The MEPs have supported measures
that could severely hurt and hamper the Maltese economy, which relies on a free
and open EU market for the online casinos licensed in the jurisdiction to
flourish and maintain a profit. The Remote Gaming Council was pretty much
floored by the outcome of the recent non-binding vote. For the past several
years there has been a huge push at the European Commission and within many of
the EU member states for an open gaming market that falls in line with the EU’s
principles and policies on free trade of goods and services between EU member
states.
The recent vote though was in found in favor of allowing the individual EU
member states to legislate and regulate the online casino gambling industry on
their own accords. Basically noting that the EU policies would not apply to the
gambling industry. This goes in complete disaccord with what countries like
Malta and others have been trying to accomplish in the European market. For
Malta, the shocking results of the vote are now causing some pretty big fallout
for the 5 MEPs that voted on the new regulation concept.
The fact of the matter is that Malta’s official stance on the online casino
gambling industry is very much in line with the alternative report that prepared
by MEP Malcolm Harbour. The problem arises with the way that the Maltese MEPs
treated this alternative report – with the negative vote from several of the
Maltese MEPs, the alternative report was solidly defeated. This has triggered a
lot of problems and issues as Maltese authorities and the online casino gambling
industry on the whole look to Malta to determine where the error in
communication occurred. |
