Sweden Not in Compliance
Sweden has been catching a lot of flack in the industry media lately for the
government’s actions concerning the offshore online casino gambling industry.
Swedish officials have continuously and effectively ignored all of the European
Commission’s requests for new internet gambling policy that is more open to
foreign competition. Rather than come into compliance, the Swedish government is
considering even more methods they could use to block the foreign online casinos
from competing with the state monopoly – IP blocking is one of the most
controversial current suggestions.
The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has recently come right out
and publicly criticized the Swedish government for their actions – or rather
lack of actions. At some stages of the game it appeared as though the Swedish
government may be turning is its obstinacy and would consider long-term and
sustainable online casino gambling regulations that comply with European Law.
Any thoughts in that direction though have been apparently abandoned and the
gambling companies are forced to either take a step back from the Swedish
gambling market or risk tangoing with the state government in the courts.
Moves toward new legislation and regulation of the online casinos have been like
a slap in the face to the industry. The proposed new solutions really do not
provide the foreign internet gaming sites with a competitive and level playing
field. This is the reason that the EGBA is publicly giving the Swedish
government a tongue lashing – it seems as though the issue is a mere joke to the
Swedish government and no officials from Sweden are actually willing to come to
the table with new regulations that would comply with EU law. |
