April Deadline Stirring Excitement
Congressman Barney Frank, the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee
is stirring a bit of excitement throughout the online casino gambling industry
with his announcement that he will once again introduce his internet gambling
bill to the Congress before the end of April. Congress is currently not in
session because of the Easter holidays, but comes back half-way through the
month. Offshore online casinos are closely watching the new developments in the
US’s internet gambling policy and there is actually a lot riding on whether
Frank can affect some real change in the US’s gambling policies. The European
Union is now pushing US politicians for a new policies, as is the WTO, and
several US states are even welcoming a regulated gambling market because of the
revenue that it would bring to the state coffers.
There is really no telling which way the votes are going to go on the online
casino gambling issue. Although Congress is still controlled by a majority of
Democrats, analysts say that this is not going to be enough to ensure that
Frank’s new legislation passes. There is also a lot of opposition to internet
gambling and the bill is undoubtedly going to raise a lot of debate when it is
brought to the floor of Congress for discussion. The Republican right has the
support of conservative Christian groups. But on the flip side, Frank’s bill
introduces a way for the US government to bring in a lot more revenue – which is
certainly an attractive proposal during an economic recession.
The introduction of Frank’s bill is enough to give the foreign online casinos
the hope that there just might be new US policies in place sometime in the near
future. Although Frank is not wholly confident the bill will pass this time, he
will continue to fight for a regulated and licensed internet gambling industry
and the repeal of the UIGEA for as long as it takes. |
