Province Steps Against Online Casino
The Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) has had a bit of an about-face
recently concerning the spread of online casino gambling throughout the region.
Anti-gambling sentiments have been pretty high over the past several months and
the one firm that had permission to operate in the region, the Meridien Vista
Gaming Corporation was recently informed that it had to stop all gaming related
activities. This revocation of the company’s ability to operate online casino
gambling related activities doesn’t come as too much of a surprise since this is
the direction the situation has been headed in for months. Even so though, it
surely comes as unwelcome news to Meridien, which was allowed to set up shop in
the CEZA several years ago.
Most specifically, online casinos are not allowed in the CEZ region, but
Meridien was given express permission to implement jai-alai betting kiosks in
the province. That too is now apparently now longer allowed since Meridien was
told to shut down all online casino and internet gaming related services in the
CEZ. This is not only the largest province in the Philippines, but the only one
that allowed internet gambling related activities. The MVGC president got wind
of the operations and ordered that all so-called “controversial operations”
cease their business in the CEZ.
Meridien and the companies organizing betting and online gaming activities in
the Zone insist that they were operating within the law and within the
permissions initially granted by the CEZA when Meridien established operations
in the province. |
