Online Casinos Represented in Congress Again
The online casino gambling industry was taken by surprise this week when David
Carruthers, a former CEO of BetonSports.com plead guilty to the charges that he
has faced for several years now. Carruthers was placed under house arrest in St.
Louis, Missouri nearly three years ago at this point for illegal activities
related to the US online casino gambling industry. Although Carruthers was
hoping to fight the charges, the three years without a trial or even a trial
date seem to have worn down his resistance. The BetonSports debacle has netted
several arrests and the state governments have certainly taken their sweet time
in trying those individuals arrested for the online caisno gambling related
business.
The US Department of Justice has been actively involved in prosecuting all of
those individuals and companies that were operating illegal offshore online
casino gambling businesses prior to, and during the implementation of the UIGEA.
Carruthers agreed to both plead guilty and will also not appeal the sentence
handed down in his case, provided that the sentence does not exceed 33 months.
Other terms of the plea deal include Carruthers’ promise that he will not engage
in any form of illegal offshore online casino gambling related activities once
he is released from house arrest.
Although Carruthers pled guilty to the charges, there is still no speedy release
date in sight. The judge who recorded Carruthers’ plea indicated that Carruthers
will remain under house arrest for his illegal online casino gambling related
activities until his sentencing date on October 2, 2009. |
