Renegotiation and Luck Contribute
There are a lot of questions in the global community about problem and addictive
gambling, why it happens, and the most effective ways to ensure that problem
gambling habits are spotted early and stopped. New research out of the
University of Las Vegas indicates that the way that land and online caisno
gamblers think about their game play contributes to problem gambling habits.
Basically, the “invincible” syndrome comes into play, as does the concept of
luck and a little bit of the way that people negotiate with themselves all have
a bearing on how the land and online caisno poker players will adjust their game
play.
A lead researcher at the University, Jacob Avery, is looking to address a couple
of very specific questions that he feels, once fully answered, will shed a lot
of light on the issues confronting land and online casinos and poker venues as
they attempt to promote responsible gaming and prevent problem gambling at their
venues. There is a lot of research going on in the global market related to
online casino gambling in particular, but Avery’s research is more narrowly
focused to the poker gaming industry.
What Avery found was that players at a poker table feel invincible after a big
win and so they continue to play the game, even if it starts to turn against
their favor. This is where the notion of luck also comes into play, a big win
often translates, in the human psyche, as a feeling that “luck is now on the
player’s side.” And at the same time, players will often overlook skill in the
game of poker, in the heat of the moment, and instead rationalize that their
loosing because the other player is lucky, not because the other player is a
more skillful poker gambler. This occurs in the land and online casino poker
gambling industries and is pretty rampant. Avery is continuing more research
along these lines and will likely have some more research to report in the
coming months and years. |
