Sweden's Plans for Censorship
The online casino gambling industry news is alight with the possibility that the
Swedish government is going to take a page out of the Australian government’s
proposed regulations and censor internet sites in the country as a way to
effectively block foreign internet gambling sites from the market. Foreign
online casinos are outraged that Sweden would pass such blatantly protectionist
regulations and legislation in the midst of the European Commission’s attempts
to convince Swedish officials to open the gambling market. Outside of the
internet gambling industry rights activists fear that this is the first step in
limiting civil liberties of Swedish citizens.
As for the Swedish citizens, they are currently able to access foreign online
casinos at will despite the fact that the government operates a state gambling
monopoly. Land gambling and betting only goes through the state monopoly but the
state government has not actually implemented methods to keep the foreign online
casino gambling companies from accessing the Swedish market through the
internet. In the current economy though, it seems as though the Swedish
government is looking for ways to protect its gambling interests and the large
amount of money that is funneled into the government’s coffers from the
state-run monopoly.
Criticism is high on the government-commissioned land and online casino gambling
report that proposed IP censorship and blocking technology as a way to keep
Swedish gamblers from using the foreign gaming sites. There is actually very
little support for the proposal outside of the government and Sweden officials
could face some serious backlashes if the proposal goes any further. |
