Making Top 5
The United States is undeniably one of the world superpowers. Although the US’s
reputation was sullied a bit over the past eight years, with a new
administration in place there is hope around the world that the US will begin to
repair some of the rediculousness perpetuated by former president George W.
Bush. A recent op-ed article out of a Hawaii newspaper looked at all of the US
legislation – federal and state laws and picked out five of the dumbest bans
that just have one place left they ought to go – into the trash bin.
Interestingly enough, although the state bans on sex toys made the list, as did
a ban on bottled water, the only federal legislation to make the top five is the
US government’s ban on offshore online casinos accessing the US market. The
UIGEA is a Bush-era piece of legislation that severely restricts the level of
civil liberties of gamblers in the US. The op-ed piece notes that while some of
the bans seem frivolous, there is a very real threat behind all of these bans
because of the way that they over-step the boundary-line between protecting
citizens and nonsensical laws that infringe on civil liberties. The article
argues that this is the case with all five of the bans, including the online
casino ban, and that these five bans need immediate attention.
The ban on internet poker and online casinos though is an issue that goes far
beyond merely a funny joke – the situation is much more serious than all of that
and the US government really needs to address the negative implications of the
UIGEA on domestic and foreign relations. |
