Legalizing South African Online Casinos
There has been a lot of talk over the past couple of years about the online
casino gambling industry in South Africa – namely the fact that South Africa
currently does not have any hard and fast regulations in place to protect its
citizens from offshore gambling companies. The unregulated market is unsafe for
the gamblers, yet naturally that has not stopped the industry from flourishing
and growing rapidly in the market. The South African government has been working
closely with the National Gambling Board to create a set of regulations and
legislation that will effectively block out unregulated sites and make the South
African gambling market a mini-model of the UK market essentially. There has
been talk of licensing the online casinos and only allowing licensed companies
to then advertise in the market. These new regulations are designed to
specifically block out the gaming sites that are currently gaining momentum in
the market.
The new legislation in South Africa has been in the works for more than a year
now and reports out of the government indicate that new legislation may be just
around the corner – a couple of months on the outside. The process has taken
some time because the current online casino gambling legislation making its way
through the government was not only written and reviewed, but then it was
publicly published for comment. The National Gambling Board anticipates that if
the regulations and new legislation make it through without many changes there
will be no need to re-publish the regulations publicly.
The National Gambling Board is eager to implement the new regulations because of
the many online casinos that are currently operating in the regulatory void.
Notably, the Board has publicly stated that any internet gambling companies that
have operated in the South African market illegally will not be eligible for one
of the roughly ten licenses that will likely be rewarded once the new
regulations and legislation passes. |
