Online Casino Frontrunner
The French market hasn’t even officially opened yet and the online casino
gambling industry is eagerly pressing forward with submissions and attempts to
be one of the first operators to secure a French gaming license. The
competition, naturally, is fierce considering all of the major gambling
companies would love to have initial access to the market as it emerges from a
previous total monopoly. France was one of the dozen or so countries that
refused to open up their gambling markets to foreign competition from online
casinos and gambling companies despite heavy pressure from the European
Commission. The changing factor for France was essentially the threats from the
Commission to take the case to the European Court of Justice.
At that point the French government conceded the point and announced that it was
in the drafting process of new regulations that would legalize, license, and
regulate the online casinos entering the French market. With that announcement
all of the major gambling companies began to plan their entry into the market.
Intralot is one of the most outspoken of the online casino gambling companies
seeking a French license – specifically, the company is looking to obtain a
5-year license for horseracing and sportsbetting.
There is no clear indication of when the new legislation will come into effect
and how soon online casino gambling companies can anticipate applying for French
licenses. According to information from the French government the final stages
of drafting and then submitting the new legislation for approval should conclude
before the end of the year – that puts new sites entering the market as soon as
January 2010 as an estimation. |
