Skill Dominant Cheers Online Casinos
The conclusive results of some recent studies are providing a bit of cheer to
the online casino gambling industry this week as they yet again face the weighty
task of taking on the US government and other governments that unfairly classify
poker as a game of chance versus skill. Recent research out of the University of
Hamburg indicates that across a lot of hands skill dominates chance. The study
was conducted to take into account the two main ways that poker takes place – on
land and at the online casinos. By studying actual players rather than using
computer models the researchers were able to come up with some pretty conclusive
results that looked like they will be backed by a second study currently in the
works at the Delaware based Ohio Wesleyan University.
The game of poker has faced pretty intense persecution by lawmakers because of
its perceived similarity to games of chance like slots and roulette. The US has
banned online casinos because they are internet-based games of chance; poker
gambling was also included in the ban and research studies suc as the most
recent one give overwhelming support to efforts by the PPA and others interested
in legalizing the game of poker in the US.
The study was quite simple really and was designed to specifically look at
whether chance or skill dominated each individual player’s game across 55,000
hands of land and online casino poker. The theory was that if chance played a
huge role in the game the a player’s wins and losses would vary wildly
throughout the game. Conversely, skill – either terrible lack of skill or very
skillful players would more consistently lose or win the hands of poker. The
outcome showed that skill noticeably prevailed after only 1,000 hands of land or
online poker. |
