A Confusing Lottery Win

What would you do if you knew that you had purchased a winning lottery ticket, but somehow, somewhere, the lottery ticket was lost? This is the scenario that found resolution just last week in the UK – the only difference, the finder of the winning lottery ticket opted to instead cash in the winnings and use the winnings for personal gain. The story is actually a good warning to all of the land and online casino lottery market – honesty is the only choice.

The recent case out of Swindon, UK pits a young married couple against an older woman who regularly plays the lottery (not the online casinos, but we’ll forgive her!). The old woman, Dorothy McDonagh, a 61 year old regular lottery gambler, purchases tickets on a weekly basis, and, like a dedicated player keeps the proof of the purchases. McDonagh dropped the lottery ticket at the grocery store where Amanda Stacey, a 34 year old housewife, found the ticket on the floor, took it home and realized that it had the winning numbers and was worth a whopping GBP 30,000.

The story gets a whole lot more complicated now. Stacey is not a regular lottery player or online casino gambler or perhaps she would have realized that honesty is the best policy – or maybe that cheaters never prosper…instead she found out the hard way. Once the older woman came forward with the situation the case went to the police – Stacey received an 11-month deferred jail sentence and learned a very, very valuable lesson: false claims in the lottery are fraudulent and can actually result in serious jail time.
